If you are choosing between blinds and shutters, and would like to avoid running your air conditioner or fans all summer, be sure to give some consideration as to which will offer better natural cooling throughout the warmer months.
Staying Cool in the Heat
Shutters come in a variety of materials, including timber, timber composites, aluminium and PVC. In all of these cases the thickness of the material used creates a solid barrier for light and heat. When drawn, shutters provide excellent natural cooling.
Many forms of blinds do not offer the same resistance against sun and heat. Roller blinds and panel glides, for example, can look very elegant, but are designed to let in some light even when drawn, and inevitably let in some heat as well. If you would prefer blinds over shutters and are concerned about providing natural cooling solutions, choose a blockout blind such as verticals. The extra thickness of vertical blinds provides better cooling than partially transparent blinds.
For shutters, if heat resistance is crucial, timber shutters are ideal. Made from high-resilience timber products, these shutters are tested for high heat deflection and are specifically formulated to withstand even extreme temperatures. They are also extremely elegant and, with their lighter-coloured design, can help make a range of spaces feel light and bright.

This video shows just how versatile and easy-to-operate the Easy Garage Screen Door is. The Easy Garage Screen Door is a large fly wire screen that drops down over your garage entrance, allowing you to use the garage without having to choose between fresh air and the absence of annoying insects. A built-in sliding door makes getting in an out of the garage a breeze.
Easy to Lower
As the video shows, these high-quality US-made screens drop down from a ceiling mount with just a light tug on the connecting straps. In seconds, the screen is in place, creating an instantly fly-free garage, workshop or entertaining area. Entry and exit is by the built-in sliding door.
Easy to Raise
Another quick tug on the straps and the Easy Garage Screen Door slides back into place in its ceiling mount. A reverse angle towards the end of the video shows how this works, and how the screen does not interfere with the operation of the garage door itself.
When both the garage door and the Easy Garage Screen Door are raised, they lie flat against the garage ceiling, one beneath the other. Either the door or the screen, as desired, can then be lowered without one getting in the way of the other. The Easy Garage Screen Door is an ingeniously simple mechanism that can instantly turn any garage into a multi-purpose room.

Some things never go out of style. There is good reason for this: from a design point of view, they seem to have already been perfected. Simple, elegant and timeless, shutters are one of these classics.
Shutters: Classic and Timeless
The technology of making shutters has evolved a long way in recent decades. As well as classic wooden shutters, it is now possible to get composite wood, PVC, aluminium and a range of other types of shutters. But, despite these changes in materials, the overall shutter look has changed little over the years, a fact that sees customers choosing these window treatments year after year.
Shutters give a house a classic look that defies contemporary interior designs. They work well on a range of building designs, both modern and older houses. They are also as functional today as they were half a century ago, allowing you to manage the amount of light and heat that comes into your house.
If you are tossing up between different window treatment options, shutters are an investment that you can be assured you won’t feel the need to replace in years to come. And because they block out the heat in summer and keep it in during winter, shutters can also help you keep a lid on rising power bills.

If your living room is still the place to party like it’s 1999, it may be time to consider a few updates to bring it into the present century. Here are a few options for window treatments and other touch-ups to help you get that modern look and feel.
Install a Flat-screen TV
Flat screen TVs are no longer a luxury item. They have become ever more popular as they have come down in price. As well as their stunning picture quality, part of the key to their success is the extra space they offer: with a wall mounted TV, there is no need for a TV cabinet, which suddenly gives you an extra half a metre or so of living space to work with.
Wireless Connections
Are you still plugging in to get online? Give the wires the flick with a Wi-Fi modem and home network so that all your devices can communicate with one another and the outside world without the need for unsightly cables - so much more elegant.
Install Motorised blinds
Motorised blinds allow you to open and close your blinds with the touch of a remote control, just as you would to change channels on a TV. A wide variety of blinds and shades styles can be motorised. They are particularly well suited to rooms that have plenty of large windows: all your blinds can be open and shut all at once – simple and seamless.

Venetian blinds are relatively easy to install and even easier to take down, whether you’re giving the blinds a thorough cleaning, replacing your window treatments or moving home. However, care should be taken to avoid damaging the blinds themselves as well as your walls and windows.
In this video, blinds expert Bill Walker demonstrates how to safely remove Venetian blinds from window spaces in three easy steps, using just a drill, screwdriver and a Phillips drill bit. The first step is to open the brackets with the screwdriver, after which the blinds can be removed without causing damage. Once the blinds have been removed, you can remove the screws from the brackets using the Phillips drill bit, making sure you hold the bracket firmly in place.
For ease of removal, blinds should be raised all the way prior to removing them. If you are not installing new blinds, holes left behind by the screws can be filled in with joint compound using a putty knife, which can be sanded or sponged down to create a smooth finish. The joint compound can then be painted to blend in with the rest of the wall, which may require use of a primer depending on shade.
